Rose Detloff, RMR, CRR

Hello! My name is Rose, and I am an official court reporter. I am originally from Tucson, Arizona, and now live in Arlington, Virginia. I studied Magnum Steno Theory at Oklahoma State University online, and I completed the program in 10 months, got my RPR in 12 months, and got my RMR in 20 months. I also compete in speed contests and have placed 1st place in Virginia and 2nd place nationally.Below is the practice routine that I followed while in school. It consists of tips that I gathered from mentors and working reporters when I was a student.

Theory

Your theory is the foundation of your learning. Mastering your theory and eliminating hesitation is the key to gaining speed quickly.

Speed Building

Speed building can be tedious and frustrating. It is important to practice to dictations in a variety of ways to not only keep it interesting, but to expand your abilities in terms of accuracy versus speed.

Some notes

Court reporting school is truly unlike any other kind of learning experience. You are going to fail more than you succeed, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. Throw out your perfectionism, and look at each failure as an opportunity to learn something. Be proud of yourself for venturing on this journey. Trust the process.
